The
programs of study for percussion majors are designed to develop
performers with strong fundamental skills and sophisticated musicianship,
who can apply these skills to any musical setting: orchestral, solo,
chamber, commercial, or nontraditional. Students will achieve a
high degree of professional competence and learn appropriate stylistic
approaches to the literature of various historical periods.
In addition to studies with our expert faculty, students are provided
additional opportunities to play for and observe world-renowned guest
artists. Recent master classes in this department have included: John
Bergamo, Myron Bretholtz (bodhran), Doug Howard (Dallas Symphony),
Vadim Karpinos (Class of 2000, Chicago Symphony Orchestra), Kakraba
Lobi and Valerie Naranjo (West African gyil/marimba), Randy Max (timpanist,
Rotterdam Philharmonic), Rolando Morales and Bobby Sanabria (Afro-Cuban
music), Rainer Seegers (timpanist, Berlin Philharmonic), Carlos Stasi
and Guello (Brazilian music), Mayumi Sekizawa (Class of l999, marimba),
Glen Velez, Dave Weckl, and Nancy Zeltsman.
