The Setting the Stage Guest Speaker Series features industry experts sharing their advice, insights, and experience to help MSM students advance their careers.

Each school year The Center for Career Readiness & Community Impact (CCRCI) produces dozens of informative Setting the Stage panel discussions and guest speaker appearances. A range of music professionals and entrepreneurs, including many MSM alumni, share valuable career information. Past workshops are listed below.

Developing A Career as a Jazz Educator

  • Jazz pianist, vocalist, and educator Brenda Earle Stokes (MM ’04) will share her experience as a jazz performer, composer, and teacher. Brenda currently has an extensive online presence as a piano and theory expert, has cultivated an epic body of work as a recording artist, and manages an in-person and virtual private teaching studio. She will share her experience and knowledge on how to grow a multi-faceted career as an educator.

Personnel Management and Road Life

  • Saxophonist/woodwind doubler and contractor Kristy Norter will discuss her career from both the perspective of the hiree and the person doing the hiring. Currently Kristy and her team manage the booking and personnel for countless Broadway shows, tours, recordings and events throughout NYC and beyond. She’ll be sharing her history as well as pointers for musicians looking to build their professional acumen.

The Conscious Artist
(Pforzheimer Recital Hall)

  • This interactive workshop explores the critical and often overlooked topic of mental health awareness in the performing arts. Drawing from The Conscious Artist® podcast and Pallavi Mahidhara’s experience as a concert pianist and mental health advocate, this session opens space for honest dialogue around any and all challenges that artists face. Through real-life stories and practical tools (breath work, body alignment, injury prevention, and mindset strategies), participants learn how to build emotional resilience and sustainable artistry.
