Listed below are the audition/prescreening procedures as well as the various audition requirements/repertoire for each degree level.

Prescreening Procedures

All piano applicants for the Master of Music, Doctor of Musical Arts, Professional Studies and Artist Diploma programs are required to submit a CD or DVD for prescreening purposes, in order to receive an invitation to a live audition in New York City. (Applicants applying to the Bachelor of Music program do not need to submit a prescreen recording). The recording must include all of the repertoire as listed below. It is not required that the format be a professional or studio recording, but the sound quality must be as good as possible. All recordings must be unedited.

Bachelor of Music

No prescreening recording is required.

Master of Music

Two works of contrasting style. You may include individual movements of multi-movement works. Playing time should total approximately 15-20 minutes. Please choose works that best represent your individual artistry.

Professional Studies, Doctor of Musical Arts, Artist Diploma

A complete solo recital program representing at least three contrasting style periods. Playing time should total approximately 60-70 minutes.

Audition Procedures

  • Auditions are approximately 10 minutes in length (doctoral auditions are approximately 30 minutes in length). Each applicant chooses their first work and the faculty will choose a second, and possibly third, work from the audition repertoire list provided by the applicant.
  • Applicants must perform all works from memory.

Undergraduate Audition Requirements

  1. Prelude and fugue or another work of J.S. Bach which contains a fugue.
  2. Complete sonata by Haydn, Mozart, Schubert, or Beethoven.
  3. Complete work or works from the 19th or 20th centuries.

Graduate Audition Requirements

  1. Prelude and fugue or another work of J.S. Bach which contains a fugue.
  2. Complete sonata by Haydn, Mozart, Schubert, or Beethoven.
  3. Complete work of the 19th century.
  4. Complete work of the 20th century.

Doctoral and Professional Studies Audition Requirements

Full-length recital which includes works from at least four contrasting style periods including a 20th-century work.
