The Manhattan School of Music Symphony, Philharmonia, and Chamber Sinfonia provide orchestral instrumentalists with the opportunity to participate in three separate series of concerts which are open to the public. The orchestral program is enriched by selected guest conductors for concerts and readings. Our orchestras have performed in venues such as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and Merkin Concert Hall. Student participation in chamber music and small ensembles is determined by audition and placement by the manager of Chamber Music and Ensembles.

Jazz ensembles also present numerous concerts and often feature jazz greats as guest soloists. The Jazz Orchestra, one of the School's three large jazz ensembles, has appeared at festivals and conventions throughout the country. All jazz students participate in small combos each semester.

Our school also has two distinguished ensembles in residence: the American String Quartet and Windscape. The American String Quartet, which regularly performs worldwide, includes Peter Winograd and Laurie Carney, violins; Daniel Avshalomov, viola; and Wolfram Koessel, violoncello. They have been in residence here since 1984, presenting a season of concerts and coaching an enthusiastic group of student chamber ensembles. Windscape, a wind quintet, has been in residence at Manhattan School of Music since 1995. Each of its members - Tara O'Connor, flute; Randall Ellis, oboe; Alan Kay, clarinet; David Jolley, horn; and Frank Morelli, bassoon - has established an international reputation as a soloist and ensemble musician. Windscape's concert schedule includes a series of performances here each year. One of the ensemble's innovations is to invite exceptional students to join them for performances of larger chamber works. The group's other activities here include coaching chamber ensembles and conducting master classes.
